Resolved Question: Which is the more scenic section of the Appalachian Trail? (3-choices)?

I am looking to some AT thru-hikers to settle an argument for me. Two of my buddies and I are hoping to spend a week on the AT next summer - the week after Labor Day. I like the idea of hiking the stretch that runs through Great Smoky Mtns Nat'l Park. Another buddy says he heard that the section just north of Asheville NC is really the most scenic section of the trail so another option would be to hike between Erwin TN and Lake Watauga. The third in our group argues that actually the MOST beautiful section of the AT is up in New England so we really ought not worry about which is most scenic section and just do the section he wants to do which includes 3-4 days on each side of Damascus VA (roughly Lake Watauga TN to Marion VA). So the question for thru-hikers: Are any of these sections significantly more or less scenic (or worthy for some other reason) than others?
